Manley Augustus Buchanan aka Big Youth (citing his influences as John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and the Beatles) rose out of the poverty of the Kingston ghetto by working as a cab driver and a mechanic. After working with the Lord Tippertone soundsystem, he started recording with various producers he scored a huge hit with S.90 Skank in 1972, produced by Keith Hudson. For many years Big Youth ruled the deejay scene with sublime albums as Screaming Target (partly recorded at Randy's), Reggae Phenomenon, Natty Cultural Dread, Dreadlocks Dread (partly recorded at Randy's) and Hit the Road Jack. Here, Big Youth versions Carl Malcom's No Jestering. Skin, Flesh & Bones play the riddim, Chicago Steve from Madison, Wisconsin (he also did Toots & The Maytals' Reggae Got Soul) plays the blistering harp on the flipside. A dub version, in a slightly different mix to the 45, can be found on Blood & Fire's Forward the Bass.
